News/Events
Algae thrive in warm, sunny conditions—two things that increase significantly during the spring months. Here are a few key factors contributing to algae growth:
Warmer Water Temperatures: As temperatures rise, pond water warms up, creating an ideal environment for algae to grow and reproduce.
Increased Sunlight: Longer daylight hours provide more energy for photosynthesis, which boosts algae production.
Nutrient Runoff: Spring rains often wash nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus into the ponds—from fertilizers, soil, and plant debris—which algae feed on.
Stagnant Water: In areas with low circulation, algae can flourish more easily.
Treatment and Management
We are actively managing algae growth with the following environmentally responsible treatments:
Algaecide Application: Periodic, professionally managed algaecide treatments help control blooms without harming fish or beneficial aquatic life. Thes treatment can take up to 30 days to take effect.
Aeration Systems: Some of our ponds have aerators or fountains to improve water circulation and oxygen levels, which help discourage algae.
Beneficial Bacteria: These naturally occurring microbes are added to help break down organic matter and outcompete algae for nutrients.
Preventative Measures: We monitor nutrient levels and work to reduce runoff through strategic landscaping and educational outreach.
How You Can Help
Residents can support healthy pond ecosystems with a few simple actions:
- Avoid over-fertilizing lawns and gardens, especially near pond edges.
- Keep grass clippings and yard waste out of the water.
- Report any unusual pond conditions to the board or property manager.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we continue to care for our shared outdoor space. If you have questions or would like more information on pond management practices, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,
St. Johns Northwest Master BOD
